Strategic thinking is not so much about analyses as it is about tolerating complexity and uncertainty. The ability to tolerate complicity and uncertainty can be tested. There are several models for understanding the cognitive ability for complex reasoning. Some of these models do also provide the basis for testing. One such model was originally created by Elliot Jaques in a theory he called Stratified System Theory. A South African company – Cognadev – has developed a test building on this theory.

I have been using this test – Cognitive Process Profil (CPP for short) – in my research for some years now. I am now also able to offer the test commercially. Contact me if you want to know more. The test is computerised, and even though it is a supervised test, it can be taken remotely. The test is not a self-assessment test, you will solve a number of problems. It is also not an IQ test. CPP tests your ability to solve unfamiliar, complex and ambiguous. You will receive an extensive written report as well as a longer coaching session.
